Mailing List Support FAQ

Here are the most frequently asked questions regarding the lists hosted by Boy Genius. Please read this page first before asking for help. If your question is not answered on this page, please send it to the list owner.

Note: For the purposes of this page, the example list name is 'example@lists.boygenius.com'. To use any commands listed on this page, substitute the name of the list for 'example'. If your list is not run behind the @lists.boygenius.com domain, and is instead run behind one of our customers' domains (e.g. list@fvleiden.org), substitute the domain name, also. If you find this confusing, you can probably find the "real" address on our lists page.

How to I switch from one list format (digest or standard) to the other?
Follow the instructions above for unsubscribing from the current version of the list, and then follow the instructions above for subscribing to the other version of the list.

I have a new email address. How do I change my subscription to use the new address?
There are two steps. First, send an unsubscription request from your old address, per the instructions above. Second, send a subscription request from your new address. Both steps will generate confirmation messages to which you must respond in order for the changes to take effect. When you reply to these confirmation messages, you do not need to edit the message at all; just hit 'Reply' and 'Send'.

If you can no longer send mail from your old address, see the next question.

I have a new email address, but I can't send mail from my old address any longer. How can I tell the server about my new address?
If you can still receive mail from your old address (user@old.com), but you can no longer send mail from it, send a message from your new account to:

     example-unsubscribe-user=old.com@lists.boygenius.com

Please note the substitution of the equals sign (=) for the at sign (@) in the old account address.

The server will generate a confirmation message to user@old.com. When you receive it, hit reply, and copy the To: address from the reply into the To: address of another message from your new account. Send the message, and your old address will be unsubscribed. You do not need to copy the message body or subject line, the address is the only thing that matters.

If you have not yet subscribed to the list via your new address, see the questions above regarding subscribing to a standard list, or subscribing to a digest version of a list.

If you can no longer receive mail at your old address, see the next question.

I have a new email address, and I can neither send nor receive mail via my old address. How can I update my list subscription address?
Send a message to your list owner at:

     example-owner@lists.boygenius.com

Be sure to include your old address, the list you are contacting them regarding, and whether you are subscribed to the standard or digest version of the list.
